Transmitted Disease Sidelines Low Country Woman (Savannah Morning News 6/30/98) - The
disease rarely has been reported in the Lowcountry, according to the state Department of
Health and Environmental Control. One case has been reported this year in Beaufort County,
along with seven others in the state. Last year, three cases were reported in the county
and 36 statewide. Earlier this month, Carrington was diagnosed with Rocky Mountain spotted
fever, a potentially fatal tick-transmitted disease found throughout the country. It
nearly killed her. |

ever. The good news: that new vaccine works. Those lush grasses and eruptions of colorful
spring wildflowers around the country this week may seem like a benign by-product of El

OK's New Vaccine for Preventing Lyme Disease (ABC news 5/25/98)
(ABC News) SmithKline Beecham's vaccine stimulates the body to make antibodies
against the outer surface protein of the Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that
transmits Lyme disease from ticks to humans. In human trials, the vaccine, given in
three boosters over a year, kept 79 percent of patients from getting the disease. |
